Brunch and Bourbon - Video Collaboration with OMS Photo

I really dig this recent project I worked on with Cincinnati’s OMS Photo. OMS’s TJ Vissing, reached out to me to see if I would like to come see their new motion control system with a robotic arm. TJ has worked with me on a few projects in the past such as Frisch’s Big Boy, Hot Head Burritos, Fazoli’s, etc.... I have worked with mo-co systems for a while and had just worked on the west coast with a high-speed BOLT system, and I was VERY excited to see a similar mo-co system come to our home town! TJ made arrangements for me to visit his studio and meet with OMS photo’s director Jake Anderson and creative tech/motion control guru Paul Lanterman. From there we arranged for two days of video shooting.

“Brunch With Friends”

The first video we worked on was a brunch themed video sweeping over tables and flying through people enjoying the meal.  From the start, I enjoyed collaborating with Jake and the OMS crew on lighting ideas, robot moves, and more. Jake directed the shoot and had the complete vision in his mind. It was really a lot of fun to offer up my years of experience, my camera, and an array of lenses to these guys to make it all possible.

The thing about motion-control is the ability to create shots and camera movements that are typically beyond the scope of conventional motion photography when using jibs or dollies, etc….

The motion-control systems not only allow for intricate camera moves, but it has the robotic ability to precisely repeat the same move multiple times, we can even pre-program focus marks, and activate other systems like motorized turntables, motorized pouring rigs, etc...

 Enjoy this clip!

Motion-control table-top project using vintage Baltar prime lenses....mo-co system is OMS Photography's/TJ Vissing. Director is Jake Anderson, Paul Lanterman was the mo-co programmer

and a BEHIND THE SCENES clip:

Here is a cool behind the lens look of the Pancake project using a split-screen to show the mo-co camera moving as we roll the camera..as well as the image that the camera is actually creating! Super Baltar primes embellish the warm feelings of breakfast!

The models and people apart of the shoot were the following

  • Director: Jake Anderson

  • Cinematographer: Jeff Barklidge

  • Creative Tech: Paul Lanterman

  • Food Stylist: Mellisa Milletto

  • Set Styling and Models - Anna Jones, Sarah Hone, Evan Sgouris

For the equipment enthusiasts out there here is a list of our key pieces of equipment:

  • KAISU Robotic System

  • RED Epic Dragon 6k

  • Vintage Super Baltar prime lenses: 25mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 152mm

  • Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens ARRI PL mount

“Bourbon with Motion Control”

The second video portrayed the story and vibe of high class bourbon. This main focus was about using only a few moves but repeating them with precision.

THIS is one of the beautiful aspect of motion-control: the ability to exactly repeat a camera move and change something on the set each time...in this instance, we swapped out the various cocktail glasses per take. Then the post-production could create a video where a few elements could seamless change while the whole video unfolds.

For this shoot I again offered up some equipment and experience. I was really happy with how the lighting worked out.

 Enjoy the video!

For this video the equipment we used was the following:

  • KAISU Robotic System

  • RED Epic Dragon 6k

  • Vintage Super Baltar prime lenses: 25mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 152mm

  • Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens ARRI PL mount [used for the ice cube dropping into the glass]

Here ya go! Director: Jake Anderson, I DP'd, mo-co guru: Paul Lanterman

My compliments to this very dedicated group who was truly collaborative and a joy to work with. I look forward to watching them grow in this industry.

It might be a bit of a hard sell to get advertising folks interested in motion control work, it is a specialized and unique method of creating incredible visuals, but I believe once the benefit is seen, and to know that this great gear and the personnel able to execute this work is available locally, I think it will be a big hit!
