Music Video The Famine

THE FAMINE “Consume-Devour-Repeat” music video

Fun video shot in an abandoned brewery.

We shot the band for half a day, then the narrative portion another.

Shot on the RED ONE camera and utilized primarily the LensBaby!!

This fun little lens gadget allows you to create swing-tilt images yet leave you open to twist & distort more freely than conventional swing-tilts. Just grab the lens barrel and go!

I love the distorted highlights it gives you, very noticeable on shots of the chrome hits on the drum set.

Bags of concrete created the ‘dust’…choke choke!

I had numerous drop-frames when hand holding the RED very close to either the drummer or the massive playback speakers. Once we went to the CF cards instead of the RED drives, this problem was no more.

After the 2nd or 3rd master take of the band, the guitarist rubbed his neck and said the quote of the day: “Man, I got ‘rock neck’!”

Andy Reale, the director, was a pleasure to work with! He had great ideas and yet could think on his feet when things hit the fan. That’s what you need for these shoots.

One thing I thought was very weird was MTV’s ‘censors’ not allowing us to show any means of killing the KING. The KING character of this video sits on his gold throne with hot chicks and eats giant turkey legs. An ‘assassin’ roams the halls and corridors enroute to dispatch the king. The director had to figure out how to imply death and mayhem without showing any real violence or struggle, no weapons, nor even the hint of a weapon via a shadow [my thought]…so with a series of quick cuts of hand coming at the King, a gasp, and gold coins falling out of his dieing hands, Andy got his point across.

I just thought that was strange from MTV.

BTW, the coins falling are shot at 120fps on the RED.
