BRICKYARD INSURANCE “PAINTER” TV
spot
Wobbly painter climbs ladder with open
paint bucket & falls.
Huge mess…
It snowed about 3 inches the night before
we shot. Art dept had their work cutout for them when they had to do
snow removal, then redresses the house & front yard. New mulch,
silk plants, spray-painted grass, you name it, winter must exit this
scene!
Stuntman used to double for main actor in some shots.
Paint shots were done with 2 cameras:
Phantom @ 400fps and Red at 120fps. The paint was slightly thinned down
to give it a bit of brightness from the sky backlight. Tempera finger-paint
was used which supposedly washes out of anything. I dunno, I still have
one pair of jeans and sneakers with yellow paint on them!
We had a blast watching playback at the
various over-crank frame rates.
Originally they wanted to shoot @ 1,000
fps. I mentioned that at 1,000 fps, the falling bucket would probably
take about 30 seconds to fall thru a frame 3 feet high! The intended
shot was only about 2 to 3 seconds in length, a virtual ‘still-life’
at 1,000fps. So we shot at 400 & 250 fps.
The side shot of the bucket falling [against
the house] was shot at 120fps on the Red.
Scott Davis, our gaffer, made this very
drab and overcast day look a lot warmer and brighter!
Shot on the RED with Cooke optics.
